CEA Files Lawsuit To Battle FCC On DTV Tuner Ruling

WASHINGTON — The Consumer Electronics Association will take legal action to overturn the FCC's ruling that all TV sets include digital tuners.
The CEA, which unsuccessfully lobbied against the FCC making this decision, filed the suit in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia on Oct. 11.
The two-page filing states that the CEA views the mandate that all TVs 13-inches and larger include off-air digital TV tuners by July 2007 as pointless since most consumers rely on cable and satellite service to receive programming, negating the need for the tuners.
CEA disputes the FCC assertion that the commission has the authority from Congress to make this decision based on the All Channel Receiver Act of 1962.
The CEA has estimated the tuners will cost increase a TV's cost by about $200 (See TWICE, August 19, 2002, p. 1).
