XM Subscribers Count Reaches 76K In 1st Qtr.

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 4/15/2002

XM Satellite Radio said it now has more than 76,000 subscribers as of the first quarter ending March 31. For the first quarter itself, the company added more than 48,000 subscribers, exceeding its target by 15 percent, and more than doubling its number of subscribers, said XM president and CEO Hugh Panero.

XM sales are outpacing the early sales of the DVD player, which until now enjoyed the most successful launch of any CE product. DVD sales reached 46, 774 in its first five months of sales from March 1997 through July 1997 according to NPD TechWorld, compared to XM's 76,000 subscribers in 4.5 months, or from mid- November 2001 through March 2002.
