Audiovox Gets Smartphone

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 10/18/2004

Hauppauge, N.Y. — Audiovox is no stranger to cellular PDA phones, but now the company is adding its first cellular smartphone based on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile Smartphone OS.

The SMT6500 worldphone is available now though AT&T Wireless for $199 after rebate and two-year voice/data contract. It’s billed as the smallest Windows Mobile smartphone in North America at 4.24 inches by 1.82 inches by 0.69 inches, the first Microsoft smartphone with Windows Media Player 10, and the only Windows Mobile smartphone with integrated camera in the United States. It weighs 3.6 ounces and operates on 850/1800/1900MHz GSM/GPRS networks.

Besides “pocket” versions of Microsoft Outlook, Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger, the device features Windows Media Player 10 Mobile to store and play back authorized downloaded Windows Media Audio (WMA) music files transferred from a Windows XP PC. It also plays back subscription content, or “rented” WMA files, downloaded by PC from such download services as Napster. These music files will time out if the user’s subscription isn’t paid up.

The VGA camera/camcorder features 4x digital zoom. Other features include Bluetooth and mini-SD slot.
