NEW YORK — Two-way messaging among wireless phones operating on different carriers' networks is becoming a reality, promising to stimulate the use of wireless phones as wireless text-messaging devices.
By the end of the summer, nine carriers with footprints covering 90 percent of the U.S. population will be offering intercarrier two-way Short Message Service (SMS), said InphoMatch president Colin Matthews.
InphoMatch offers the hardware/ software solutions that deliver interoperable text messaging among networks.
AT&T Wireless and VoiceStream recently added interoperability to their two-way SMS services; Cingular and Sprint PCS are about to launch.
Five other carriers will offer it by the end of the summer, Matthews said.
Two-way SMS phones can also send and receive e-mail to and from any Internet address as long as that feature is enabled by the carrier.
