PMA News: Kodak Promises Minilab, Kiosk Upgrades

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 3/4/2009

Las Vegas — Kodak will add new production capability to its Apex minilab and a new up-sell algorithm to its Picture Kiosk this year, the company said at PMA.

The Apex dry minilab system, introduced at last year’s show, will see new thermal printer options as well as a new, three-printer, 30-inch cabinet for 4-inch by 6-inch printing at up to 900 prints per hour (pph). A 70-inch cabinet option will also be added for up to 1,800 pph.

Kodak also added connectivity with its Rapid Print Scanner and improved its lab manager software, offering more photo effects, enlargement sizes and an optimized image-rendering algorithm for faster production.

The company’s Picture Movie DVD creation software used in its Picture Maker kiosks will be updated in the second quarter of this year. The new software will pack double the number of music titles available and will categorize them by event type. Kodak will also roll out an “intelligent up-sell” algorithm in its Picture Kiosks to drive DVDs and photo book sales.

Finally, Kodak will add image correction and cleaning tools to its s1220 photo scanner, in addition to software enhancements to the unit’s workflow software.
