SureWest Tests IP HDTV Delivery System

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 10/24/2005

Roseville, Calif. — SureWest Communications, a telecommunications holding company, said it will begin the final round of testing before delivering the country’s Internet-based high-definition television service.

The system is based on fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) technology.

Testing for the service will move out of the lab and into “a broader production environment” tomorrow, Oct. 25. The full-service field trial will be the final stage before commercial deployment of the HDTV service in November, according to a SureWest statement.

“Using IP technology over our fiber-optic network offers the potential for increased clarity to the HD experience and will allow SureWest to offer a variety of emerging video products, while maintaining the area’s fastest high-speed Internet service,” said Bill DeMuth, SureWest’s chief technology officer. “The IP FTTP service delivery model provides flexibility and abundant cost-effective bandwidth to deliver voice and data services, as well as a host of interactive television capabilities with IPTV.”

SureWest said it has laid fiber lines throughout the Sacramento, Calif., area, passing over 80,000 homes.

The network currently provides up to 10MBps high-speed Internet service, both downloading and uploading, with the option to double that speed up to 20Mbps.
