Dell Tabs Motorola's Garriques As CE Pres

By TWICE Staff -- TWICE, 2/16/2007

Round Rock, Texas – Ron Garriques has resigned as Motorola's executive VP and president of the company’s mobile devices division, and been named president of Dell’s global consumer products group, effective Feb. 19.

Garriques will report to chairman/CEO Michael Dell and lead a new organization handling all consumer products — from sales and marketing of desktop and notebook PCs, software and peripherals to product development and design.

“As the number of people online doubles from one to two billion over the next several years, the majority of new consumers will be located in fast-growing and emerging markets,” said Michael Dell. “We are asking Ron to create a new global consumer organization that will set new standards for innovative product design, leadership in providing the best customer experience, and flexibility in how we build and distribute products and services to meet the evolving needs of our customers around the world.”

“We grew our U.S. consumer business over tenfold in 10 years,” added Dell. “From this position of strength we’ve established robust share positions in many of the leading consumer businesses in the world including Japan, the U.K. and Canada. Our broad reach provides us with a strong foundation as we globalize our consumer organization.”

During his tenure at Motorola, Garriques served in various leadership roles, most recently directing the $28 billion global mobile devices division. Earlier he had several senior level positions with the company, including the senior VP and general manager posts for the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions for PCS (personal communications services) where he drove sales, customer satisfaction and market share improvements. He had also been senior VP and general manager of worldwide product line management for PCS.

Prior to Motorola, Garriques held management positions at AT&T Network Systems, Lucent Technologies and Philips Consumer Communications.

Garriques has an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Boston University.

At Motorola, Ray Roman, global sales senior VP, and Terry Vega, global devices senior VP, have assumed responsibility as interim co-heads of the mobile devices business, Garriques' former post.

Vega previously held positions with Lucent and Philips Consumer Communications in their wireless handset groups.
