8x8 Refreshes Videophone As Tango Video Terminal Adapter
By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 1/8/2007
LAS VEGAS — VoIP provider 8x8 will relaunch its videophone with a new riff on the concept.
Called the Tango, the device combines a traditional VoIP terminal adapter with a camera and LCD screen for placing video calls using a regular analog phone.
The video terminal adapter (VTA) offers a 5-inch color screen with icon-based navigation. It uses the H.264 compression standard and can place video calls to other 8x8 VTAs, existing Packet8 Videophones and to PCs running 8x8's Softalk software.
8x8 will sell the device on its Web site and will trial it at boutique retailers such as New York's J&R Music World, where it previously sold its Packet8 videophone, said Huw Rees, VP, 8x8. The Tango will retail for a suggested $249 with a monthly charge of $19.99 for unlimited voice and video calls in the United States and Canada.
According to Rees, 8x8 has roughly 10,000 video subscribers.
