A New Face in Flash Memory

LAS VEGAS — Memorex will throw its hat into the flash-memory card market in 2007 with a line of SD and MMC cards.
Other vendors will broaden their flash-memory offerings at International CES, catering to the increasing insistent capacity demands of the digital consumer.
Memorex will offer its TravelCard line in 512MB capacities up to 2GB for SD cards (including Mini and Micro) and MMC Micro and Mobile cards. A 4GB SDHC card will also be available along with a line of SD high-speed cards. Pricing starts at $34.99 for the 512MB SD card.
Memorex will also sell an SD plus USB dual-interface card which offers a USB pin on an SD card for transferring data. It will be available in 1GB and 2GB capacities in the second quarter. Pricing was not announced.
Argosy announced a 30GB Photo Hardisk portable back-up solution for photographers on the road. The unit features a two-color OLED display, card slots for Compact Flash Type I/II/MicroDrive, SD/MMC and Memory Stick. The drive's battery is charged via USB or AC power and can sustain a full 30GB backup per charge.
Lexar Media will introduce Platinum and Professional series SD high-capacity (SDHC) memory cards. The Professional cards will feature transfer speeds of 20MBps (or a speed rating of 133x) while the Platinum cards will carry a 60x speed rating. They will ship this month, pricing was not announced.
The company will also offer its Mercury JumpDrive USB drive with the PowerToGo operating system. The drives will be available in January in 1GB and 2GB with a capacity meter and 256 bit security software.
The JumpDrive line of USB drives will also come installed with PowerToGo in 1GB and 2GB capacities and 256-bit security software.
Sony will offer its own line of Compact Flash memory cards in the spring. Capacities will range from 1GB to 4GB with speed ratings from 66x to 138x. Pricing was not announced.
The company will also introduce a 4GB USB drive in its Micro Vault Tiny line. The drive will be preloaded with "virtual expander" software that automatically compresses files that are transferred to the drive to conserve space.
The expander software will also be available on the full-sized Micro Vault product, which will see an 8GB addition at the show.
In related peripheral news, American Recorder Technologies will ship its Photo Studio in A Box (SIB-075) this month for a suggested $89.95. The unit bundles table top photo lights, a color correcting camera lens, a 7-inch extension mini tripod, a 16-inch by 16-inch by 16-inch soft pop-up tent, and a carrier.
