palmOne GPS Car Kit Bows

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 5/25/2004

New York — PDA vendor palmOne announced at CeBIT America 2004 a car navigation kit designed to work with TungstenT3 and Zire 72 handhelds.

The new GPS Navigator is a dashboard-mounted GPS receiver that relays navigation information via Bluetooth to a handheld computer.

The Navigator uses software by Atlanta-based TomTom USA. Maps appear on the handheld screen for door-to-door, turn-by-turn directions. The Navigator can display detailed street and highway maps for the entire U.S. and Canada, and it provides voice directions. The system automatically reroutes after a wrong turn or to accommodate traffic. The GPS Navigator will be available from palmOne online starting June 11 at $299. It includes a Bluetooth GPS receiver, TomTom Navigator software, a vehicle device cradle with windshield mounting bracket and recharging cables for the palmOne handheld and GPS receiver.

TomTom recently introduced it own handheld navigation device that uses Secure Digital memory. Called the TomTom Go, it has a 3.5-inch touch screen at $799 to $899.
