Houston — Texas Instruments announced a new processor today to bring HD video to low-cost digital still cameras and other portable devices.

The new DaVinci TMS320DM355 will cost manufactures less than $10. It features an MPEG-4 co-processor for encoding or decoding 720P/30 fps video and JPEG images at 50 megapixels per second.

According to the company, the new processor can offer double the battery life of existing portable HD video devices or approximately 80 minutes of HD video capture on a pair of AA batteries.

The new processor is geared for use in digital still cameras, IP video cameras, digital photo frames and video baby monitors.
