LAS VEGAS — Dolby Laboratories' Dolby Pro Logic II is gaining adoption in the car with several suppliers having announced new products at CES.
Dolby Pro Logic II converts any two-channel source into 5.1 channel surround sound and also creates a phantom center channel when used in a four speaker system.
It will be available in a Volvo XC90 SUV factory-installed system and in aftermarket units from Alpine, Clarion and Zapco, Dolby announced.
Rockford Fosgate showed the first car stereo application of Pro Logic II last year in a high-end processor.
Alpine's new unit is an add-on surround sound processor which also decodes 5.1 surround sound, Dolby Digital and DTS formats. It doubles as a 1/3rd octave equalizer with digital crossover and digital time alignment. Called the PXA-H700, it will ship in May at a suggested retail price of $850.
Clarion is offering Dolby Pro Logic II in an AM/FM/CD/DVD changer-controller head unit called the DXZ925.
Zapco is expected to offer Pro Logic II in an eight-channel car surround decoder with custom user presets for equalization, crossover settings, time delay, and independent bass, treble and level controls.
