Car Stereo City Will Open New Flagship Store In Fall
Car Stereo City, the Portland, Ore.-based car audio specialty chain, plans to open its seventh location this fall. President Joe Monahan said Car Stereo City has signed an agreement to lease over 5,000 square feet of retail space in the city’s new Sunnybrook Retail Center near the Sunnyside/I-205 corridor. The new location will be a flagship store for the chain.

JL Amp Intro Set For CES
JL Audio will ring in the millennium with a new product category. The company will introduce amplifiers at January’s CES, confirmed president Andy Oxenhorn. The Miramar, Fla.-based company is also slated to unveil its new web site at month’s end. Shipping now is the six-model Vantage Series of enclosures (without woofers), marking JL Audio’s introduction of a new brand name into the marketplace. JL Audio created the line, explained Oxenhorn, to expand outside the vendor’s traditional high-end market segment. Suggested retails for the lineup range from $119.95 to $199.95.

Mitek Buys Coustic
Mitek, the Phoenix, Ariz.-based parent company of MTX Audio, Xtant Technologies and Oaktron Industries, has purchased the assets of the Coustic Division of Vernon, Calif.-based Concept Enterprises, which has marketed car audio electronics and speakers under the Coustic name for more than 20 years. The purchase, including all Coustic trade names, was finalized April 30. According to Mitek’s CEO Loyd Ivey, Coustic will remain independent in terms of sales, marketing and distribution. "Our alliance will allow us to consolidate overheads, with a resulting reduction in cost-to-market for the Coustic products," he said.

Delphi TV Ad Campaign Drives Tech Message
Delphi Automotive Systems, based in Troy, Mich., kicked off its first-ever television advertising campaign on May 1. The first of two TV commercials, complemented by print ads, focuses on Delphi’s partnership with the Indy Racing League. The second commercial, which airs May 17, centers on what Delphi provides to leading vehicle manufacturers and, therefore, consumers. In addition to the new advertising effort, Delphi has introduced a new tag line to replace its "Power to Simplify" slogan. The new tag is "Driving Tomorrow’s Technology."

Cobra Revs Promo Plans With NASCAR Sweepstakes
Cobra, the Chicago-based radar detector and telecommunications manufacturer, has launched a national NASCAR sweepstakes promotion to expand brand awareness and to drive sales at travel center chains and truck stops. The promotion is targeted to drivers who rely on Cobra CB radios for daily communications. All consumers who purchase a Cobra Classic CB, a six-band radar detector, or Turbo power inverter through June 30 receive a free NASCAR T-shirt by mail. Additionally, these consumers are entered into a sweepstakes with the grand prize an all expenses-paid trip for four to one of NASCAR’s biggest races – the UAW-GM Quality 500 – which takes place in Charlotte, N.C., on October 10. The drawing is August 10.

JBL Works Spring Break
JBL/Infinity Mobile, on its 1999 promotional tour, stopped off at three Spring Break destinations – Daytona Beach, Fla.; South Padre Island, Texas; and Panama City, Fla. – with its Project Camry Solara. The Camry features JBL’s new Power Series speakers and subwoofers, Panasonic’s P-10 portable DVD player and Pioneer’s CDX-P636S Premier six-disc CD changer. The road trip, scheduled to make stops in 45 locations, continues through October.
