Kenmore And Maytag Cop 'GoodBuy' Kudos

NEW YORK - Sears' Kenmore Elite washer and Maytag's ClimateZone refrigerators were the major appliance winners of Good Housekeeping magazine's 2001 "Good Buy" Awards.
The annual event salutes household products that offer the most innovative solutions to save consumers time, money and aggravation. According to editor-in-chief Ellen Levine, the winners are selected by the Good Housekeeping Institute on the basis of their ingenuity, value and exceptional performance.
"Thousands of items were tested this year by our Institute experts," she said, "but only a few truly impressed them."
Kenmore's top-loading Elite washer with Calypso wash motion did so with its extra capacity, thorough cleaning ability and miserly water usage. The machine, which carries a suggested retail price of $1,099, can clean 18 towels vs. the typical 10, and uses 22 gallons of water vs. an average of 40 gallons during the wash/rinse cycle.
Maytag's $1,899 ClimateZone refrigerators were tagged for their ability to set and maintain precise drawer temperatures, keeping meats, produce and citrus longer. In the Institute's tests, lettuce remained crisp after three weeks, and chicken stayed fresh one day longer than usual.
