DTV Assistance Centers Go Online

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 12/15/2008

Washington, D.C. – The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund (LCCREF) said Monday that DTV Assistance Centers will open in seven cities with communities deemed to be “at risk,” to help residents prepare for the Feb. 17 analog TV shut off.

The centers, which are being setup through partnerships with local community organizations in each area, will open in: Atlanta, Ga.; Detroit, Mich.; Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.; Portland, Ore.; San Antonio, Texas; San Francisco, San Jose-Oakland Calif.; and Seattle-Tacoma, Wash.

These Assistance Centers will be hubs for information and technical assistance on the transition, offer training and events to provide DTV-related assistance to members of impacted populations and local community members, according to an LCCREF statement.

The DTV Transition will require millions of Americans to take action in order to maintain access to free over-the-air television. Communities of color, people who rely on languages other than English, low-income working families, older Americans, and people with disabilities who rely on over-the-air TV for emergency public service announcements will be most affected.
