Mitsubishi Is Bringing DLP Projector To Retail

IRVINE, Calif. — Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America's presentation products division recently launched a new retail initiative, bringing its front projectors that are optimized for home-theater viewing to leading consumer electronics chains.
The new strategy was launched in support of the Home Cinema HC900U DLP-based home theater projector, which the company calls a “high performance-value” product.
So far, the company has signed on Best Buy, Fry's and ABC Warehouse.
“Home theater projectors are making the move from high-end, custom-installed theater components to something that would work in typical living and family rooms,” said Steve Medina, MDEA Presentation products division's product planning and development senior manager. “In response to this trend we have introduced our first product designed specifically for the mainstream home theater audience. Now, new retail customers can see a quality projector capable of a fabulous 300-inch screen image from a tiny six-pound box.”
The HC900U carries a $2,995 suggested retail price and features an EDTV native chip resolution of 1,024 by 576 pixels. The model has been positioned as a high-quality big-screen alternative for “families with a space crunch or a flair for home design.”
The compact projector can be mounted on a ceiling or shelf, and can be stored in a cabinet, drawer or closet after use.
The HC900U incorporates the proprietary CineRich Color, white level adjustment technology, which is said to control white levels to for accurate color balance of sports or film-based content. The system lets users enhance white level for sports or videogames, or enhance color for the best cinematic reproduction.
Also included is the company's CineView video processing technology, which reduces image artifacts, including jagged image edges in video playback. The technology uses electronic aperture control to increase black and contrast levels automatically.
Projector brightness is listed as 1,500 lumens, with a 4,000:1 contrast ratio. Inputs include DVI with HDCP.
