Memcorp Recalls Disney DVD Players

Washington — Battery packs manufactured by China-based Unitech Battery for a line of personal DVD players manufactured by China-based McNair Technology and distributed under the Disney license in the U.S. by Memcorp of Weston, Fla. has been voluntarily recalled for overheating issues, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced.

According to the recall notice, consumers should immediately stop using battery packs sold with the following Disney-brand portable DVD players: Princess (model DP3500-PRN), Fairy Flowers (model DP3500-FLR), Mickey Classic (model DP3500-MC), Mickey Mouse (model DP3500-MKY) and Power Rangers (model DP3500-POW).

The CPSC said about 102,000 of the affected units had been sold.

According to the notice, the battery packs sold with these DVD players “can overheat and possibly burst when recharging, posing a risk of burns.”

Memcorp said it has received about 17 reports of batteries overheating, including three reports of minor skin irritations and three reports of minor property damage.

The recall is for the battery packs sold with listed Disney-brand personal DVD players. They players, which have 3-inch screens, were sold in five styles with a corresponding model numbers. Model numbers are written on the back of each unit.’

The players were sold primarily at discount and electronics stores across the nation and at Disney theme parks. They were featured in the Disney catalog from April 2005 to March 2006, and sold for between $70 and $130.

Users are asked to stop using the players immediately and contact Memcorp for a replacement battery pack. For more information, consumers may contact Memcorp’s customer service department at (800) 326-0315 between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, and between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, or visit Memcorp’s Web site at www.disneyelectronics.com.
