Vizio: MPEG-2 Suit Won't Hurt Business

By TWICE Staff -- TWICE, 6/5/2008

Irvine, Calif. — Vizio has acknowledged today the MPEG-2 suit filed against it, saying that the suit will not impact its business.

The suit was filed on Monday, June 2, in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, by Mitsubishi Electric, which claims that Vizio has not taken a license to use the compression technology covered by the MPEG-2 patents.

In a statement, Vizio said its suppliers “have licenses for the MPEG-2 patents. Vizio believes that these licenses extend to Vizio’s products. Vizio has notified its suppliers of the lawsuit and expects full support and cooperation by them in the defense of the lawsuit. Accordingly, Vizio does not believe that the suit will have a material adverse impact on Vizio’s business.”

Also suing are Sony and Philips, as well as Thomson, JVC and Columbia University of New York, according to Bloomberg.com. The University holds some MPEG-2 patents. The plaintiffs seek a court order to stop use of their inventions, plus cash compensation.
