New Mobile Video Products, Subwoofers At SEMA

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 11/11/2002

At the recent Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, Rosen Entertainment Systems introduced a new value brand called Necvox, and Pioneer debuted a new competition subwoofer line called SPLSpec.

Rosen will continue to be the car video company's premium product brand, while Necvox will represent a value-oriented line, said Rosen CEO Tom Clements. Rosen currently sells under the Necvox brand in Europe and Asia, he added.

The debut of the second brand in the United States is reflective of the broadening of the market and the need to address a wider range of customers, he said.

Among the new Necvox products are the market's first 10.4-inch all-in-one DVD overhead console and the first 15.2-inch LCD screen, said Rosen. The new 10.4-inch console has a 4:3 aspect ratio and MP3 capability.

It is joined by an 8-inch 16:9 version at prices to be announced. Shipping is planned for December for the 8-inch model and late December or early January for the 10.4-inch model.

Also under Necvox is one of the largest screens in mobile video — a 15.2-inch overhead LCD — with 16:9 aspect ratio. The model RE1569 carries a suggested list price of under $1,000.

Under the Rosen line, the company showed the industry's first Double DIN DVD/TV/receiver. The AM/ FM/DVD/CD/TV has a 6.5-inch, 16:9 motorized screen and diversity antenna. It plays MP3 and allows playback of JPEG and MPEG images for viewing a photo CD.

It also has the unusual capability of being able to interface with a back-up camera option to be offered by Rosen, which provides a rear camera view of the area behind the vehicle to assist in backing up. This can also be used for rear seat viewing to check on children.

The system will also interface with an optional Magellan navigation unit. Called the R6500, it also comes with a built-in 45 watt by 4 amplifier. Shipping is expected in December at a price to be announced. Pioneer's new SPLSpec subwoofer is a 12-inch model. Designed for SPL competition, it can withstand sound pressure levels above 170dB and it handles 5,000 watts of power.

It uses new technologies including a ceramic-coated voice coil and a large roll surround that does not take up cone space.

The model TS-W5000SPL will ship in January at a suggested retail price of $900. Other sizes will follow in the future.
