Records Won, Rules Proposed At IASCA Finals

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 11/13/2000

OKLAHOMA CITY -The 12th annual IASCA world Finals held here late last month served up a world record in the IdBL League and also saw its first international competitor take a world prize.

Greg Cobbs scored a record 174.2 dB in the IdBL League world finals, while Masahiro Yoshioka, president of the Sound Creative Pro Shop in Japan, won first place in the Pro class. Yoshioka's car made it to the soundoffs via a 40-day trip in a container. Team Pioneer member Mark Liggett, meanwhile, captured the world title in the Expert 1-600 category.

Also at the IASCA World Finals, a new set of judging rules was presented by Manville Smith, IASCA rules committee chairman (and VP marketing for JL Audio). Expected to go into effect Feb. 1, the new rules will eliminate the novice division, leaving the Amateur, Pro and Expert classes.

In addition, the rules will establish a "Street" format that emphasizes sound quality but de-emphasizes costly installation techniques. The Street format will also have a simplified scoring system.

Also under the new rules, the power class system will be replaced by classifying competitors by the number of amplifier channels with which they are competing. IASCA competitors have until Nov. 21 to comment on the proposed changes.
