Kenwood Allows iPod Control Without Special Cables

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 4/24/2006

Kenwood is shipping several new head units that are among the first to offer direct high-speed iPod control without the need for a special cable.

The new USB-capable units are able to operate the iPod from the USB cable that is bundled with the iPod. The models KDC-MP632U, KDC-MP732U, KDC-MP832U, KDC-X590, KDC-X890, DPX501 and DPX701 recently began shipping at suggested retail prices between $250 and $450, said Kenwood. The new units, however, do not play back music that has been purchased from iTunes or other music with Digital Right Management (DRM).

The company is also shipping software with the products that allows the units to announce the names of songs recorded on an iPod or USB device, except for songs purchased on iTunes or songs with DRM.
