Micron To Manufacture Flash Memory

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 7/14/2004

Boise, Idaho — Semiconductor manufacturer Micron Technology announced plans last week to produce NAND flash memory, the essential memory component in consumer flash memory cards and USB drives.

The company cited growing demand for high-performance, low-cost flash solutions in mobile applications as a motivator for launching production. The company will produce NAND in its factory here. According to a spokesman, the decision has yet to be made where Micron will manufacture it long-term or if the company will outsource any of the production.

“Micron plans to break into the market as one of the top three suppliers,” said Jan du Preez, Micron’s Networking and Communication VP.

Supply will be available by the end of the year, and the company is “talking to all the major card OEMs.”
