Yamaha Gets New U.S. President

Buena Park, Calif. — Yamaha veteran Tom Sumner has been appointed Yamaha Electronics Corp. president, effective April 2, replacing Hogan Osawa.
Osawa was appointed president of sister company Yamaha Corp. of America (YCA), the U.S. marketer of musical instruments and pro audio. Sumner was also named corporate VP of YCA. Both companies are wholly-owned subsidiaries of Yamaha Corp. in Japan.

Sumner, a 19-year Yamaha executive, was VP/GM of YCA’s pro audio and combo (PAC) division, which markets musical instruments and audio/visual products in the United States.
Osawa said he was “proud of our performance during this past fiscal year” during a time in which the industry “has undergone significant changes.”
Sumner joined YCA in 1988 as national account manager for the consumer products division and was promoted to national sales manager for multimedia products in 1995. He was promoted to division GM in 2000, promoted to GM of YCA’s PAC division in 2002, then promoted to VP/GM in 2004. Before joining Yamaha, Sumner was a consumer electronics buyer for Macy’s California.
