Dell Computer Holds Top PC Spot

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 10/28/2002

Dell Computers increased its share of the U.S. PC market in the third quarter, while the newly combined Hewlett-Packard/Compaq and the remaining top selling PC companies continued to lose market share.

Overall the industry posted a gain in computer shipments for the quarter in the U.S. markets with Gartner Dataquest, San Jose, Calif., research showed an 8.6 percent gain on 11.9 million units shipped and International Data Corp., Framingham, Mass., indicating a 6.7 percent gain on 12.1 million units shipped. These are compared to the 2001 third quarter, during which sales suffered grievously due to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The firms agreed that the top five PC vendors for the third quarter 2002 were Dell, HP, Gateway, IBM and Apple with all but Dell losing market share and shipping fewer computers. Interestingly, the "other" category posted healthy gains of 11 percent on 4.3 million units shipped, Gartner, with IDC giving this category a 3.9 percent increase on 4.4 million units shipped.

IDC reported that Dell was first on the worldwide state shipping 5.2 million units and garnering 16 percent of the market with HP is a close second with a 15.5 percent share on just over 5 million units shipped. Gartner's numbers were similar.
