Boston Power Intros New Notebook Battery Technology

By Doug Olenick -- TWICE, 1/30/2007

Palm Desert, Calif. — Boston Power, a maker of cellphone and PDA batteries, today introduced a new notebook battery technology that the company says can be recharged in 30 minutes and has a longer lifetime than those now on the market.

The battery will first launch through Hewlett-Packard this summer and is not expected to add any additional cost to a notebook.

Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud, CEO and founder of Boston Power, said the lithium-ion-based battery will hold a four-hour charge and can be recharged to 80 percent of its capacity in just 30 minutes. This should enable business users to charge the computer during their lunch hour so it can last the rest of their business day, she said.

The Boston Power battery should retain its four-hour capacity for the entire expected life of a notebook, which is about three years, Lampe-Onnerud said. With last fall’s recall disasters surrounding notebook batteries in mind, she said, Boston Power designed the batteries with safety in mind. However, she did not go into any detail on what makes the batteries safer.
