Handheld Sales Decline For Q2

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 8/19/2002

International Data Corp. reported that worldwide sales of handheld PCs fell during the second quarter.

Global shipments dropped to 2.6 million units, down 10 percent from a year earlier and down 17 percent from the first quarter. IDC analysts attributed the decline to falling demand and suggested that many Palm customers are delaying purchases until the company migrates to the faster Intel processor expected later this year.

Palm's worldwide share for the second quarter rose 32.4 percent from 31 percent during 2001's same quarter, but it fell from the 40.6 percent it enjoyed during the first quarter. IDC said Palm shipped 846,000 devices in the second quarter, down from 1.3 million in the first quarter and from 890,000 during the same period in 2001.

In the United States, the picture was a bit brighter. Handheld shipments totaled 1.3 million, up 8 percent from the same period last year, but down 19 percent from the first quarter. Palm's U.S. share was 42 percent for the quarter, according to IDC.
