Imaging Boosts Supplies Business

Newton, Mass. — According to market research firm Lyra Research, the digital imaging supplies market in the U.S. will top $40 billion in 2006.
The figures include papers, inks, cartridges and thermal dye ribbon used in printing and producing digital photos and documents for consumer and commercial use. According to analyst Rodger Reis, consumer applications represent the largest share of the imaging supplies market.
Reis added that growth in supplies is projected to continue in the United States through 2009. “The paperless office was a myth,” he said.
One potential boost may come from camera phones. Another study from Lyra noted that the number of digital images captured worldwide has grown from under 40 billion in 2002 to nearly 200 billion in 2005. In 2009, the firm expects half a trillion images to be recorded, with 60 percent of them coming from camera phones.
