Umax Back in Scanner Market
Las Vegas —Umax Technologies used PMA to announce its re-entry into the scanner market with two new USB 2.0 scanners. The Astra 4950 (suggested $89.95) and 4900 ($69.95) feature gray casing and single-pass CCD scanning. Both ship this month. The Astra 4950 and 4900 offer 1200 by 2400 dpi resolution scanning, 48-bit color depth and 'one-touch' buttons on the front of the scanners for email, scan, copy, or fax. The 4950 will include a transparency adapter to scan four 35mm negative and two 35mm slides.
Alera Technologies Announces Digital Copy Station
Las Vegas — Alera introduced its new DVD/CD Digital Photo Copy Station, a memory card to DVD/CD copier, and the first product in the company’s new line of Desktop Digital Imaging products. The DVD/CD Digital Photo Copy Station burns DVDs at 8x and CDs at 40x and has slots for CompactFlash Type I and II, SD/MMC, SmartMedia, and Memory Stick (including PRO). The unit can work independent of a computer but can connect to a PC via USB 2.0. It will ship this month for a suggested retail of $599 and comes bundled with Sonic Solutions’ MyDVD, RecordNow! and Simple Backup, in addition to Arcsoft ShowBiz, MusicMatch Juke Box and Cyberlink’s PowerDVD Movie Player.
Pantone Announces Support for Canon Printer Line
Las Vegas — Color profile and media manufacturer Pantone announced that its ColorVantage dye-based inks are now compatible with Canon’s line of desktop printers. The ColorVantage line is a family of inkjet products that includes pigmented and dye-based inks, papers and specially developed printer profiles. The paper is available in a variety of finishes including high-gloss photo, semi-matte proofing, matte and fine art. Pantone dye-based inks for Canon photo printers (including the i960 and i9100) will be available in the spring. Pricing has not yet been set but the company said it will be 'lower than other OEM inks.'
PSN Adds Members
Las Vegas — The Picture Services Network (PSN), a subsidiary of the International Imaging Industry Association (I3A) that offers a directory service for digital photography users to locate and connect to digital imaging service providers, announced new members at the show. Independent Photo Imagers (IPI), a national trade association representing over 500 independent photo lab locations, and Graphx, Inc., a developer of distributed photo printing software and services, have joined PSN as Executive members. PSN also announced the directory listing of two digital photo businesses: Irvine, California-based 30 Minute Photos Etc. and eXaNetworks of Portland, Oregon.

Las Vegas — Online photofinishing provider eXaNetworks announced the launch of a low-cost, low-bandwidth digital photo sharing technology for retailers. eXaNetworks said it will charge photofinishers a one-time installation fee and monthly licensing fee for the photo sharing service. Digital photographers can use the eXaNetworks application to organize, share, and control access to their content. End users require no special software and can view photos through a simple Web interface on any standard browser at no charge. eXaNetworks' proprietary photo sharing technology is available for both Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh platforms.
Jasc Unveils Latest Paint Shop Software
Las Vegas — Software maker Jasc announced Paint Shop Photo Album 5, the newest version of its digital imaging software. Sporting a completely redesigned interface that follows the digital camera user's workflow, Paint Shop Photo Album features a PhotoSafe Archiving System that protects the user’s photos on the computer. With the QuickCD feature, users can share hundreds of photos in two clicks.
