Vegas Hotels Cut CES Rates

LAS VEGAS — In another sign of the economic times the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), producer of International CES, emailed an alert to registered attendees that hotels, here, have cut rates for the show until Dec. 1 or as long as there are rooms available.
Karen Chupka, events and conferences senior VP, told TWICE in October that CES was working with Vegas hotels to "lower rates during the show," and this report seems to be the proof of her work. CEA also set aside $1 million earlier this year for smaller retailers — through buying groups and other organizations — to get them to the show. Those in the program and attend for two nights get a one-night hotel stay free and will get $100 off on flights to the show.
All of this may encourage attendees who were planning cutbacks, or exhibitors, some of which have cut back on CES space and the number of employees they are bringing to the show, to reconsider.
Even with the economic shocks of this fall a CEA spokesperson reconfirmed what Chupka said at the New York press conference earlier this month — pre-registration is strong and that the 2009 show could be the third-largest CES in history.
The CEA email on hotel discounts for CES said more than 10 hotels have reduced their rates, some by $75 a night. The following room rates are in effect until Dec. 1 or until the rooms sell out:

Alexis Park: peak reduced from $169, to $129;

Circus Circus: peak reduced from $126, to $116;

Excalibur: peak reduced from $219, to $141, for standard rooms; from $239, to $161, for renovated rooms;

Hilton Grand Vacations Club at LV Hilton and on LV Strip: one free Continental breakfast certificate per night for one-bedroom suites;

Luxor: peak reduced from $235, to $185;

Mandalay Bay: Jan. 8 and 9 is $314; Jan. 7 and 10 reduced from $314, to $229; Jan. 11 reduced from $314, to $146;

Monte Carlo: peak reduced from $275 to $220 on Jan. 8 and 9; $190 on Jan. 7 and 10;

Palm/Palms Place: free fitness club access at Palms Spa — a $20 value — by showing room key and saying, "I'm with CES";

Planet Hollywood: peak reduced from $319, to $289, plus $20 off purchase of $100 or more at Koi Restaurant and Lounge;

Tropicana: peak reduced from $149, to $129;

Trump International Hotel & Tower: One-bedroom suites reduced from $499, to $465; shoulder nights reduced from $499, to $250, for one-bedroom suites and from $365, to $150, for studio suites.
The email stated that all rate reductions are retroactive for previous CES bookings.
