Majap Shipments Slip 3.1% In May

By Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 6/25/2001

WASHINGTON — Factory shipments of major appliances dipped 3.1 percent in May, continuing a downtrend that's seen year-to-date sales fall 7.1 percent.

According to the latest wholesale sales figures from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), refrigeration took the biggest hit last month, with shipments dropping 7.2 percent below May 2000 levels to 747,100 units. The next biggest tumble was taken by the cooking category, which fell 5.1 percent to 1.4 million units shipped.

Laundry also took it on the chin, with factory sales falling 3.8 percent from the year-ago period, to 983,400 units shipped last month.

Even room air conditioners, which should have been hitting their sales stride this season, were down 1.1 percent to 1.1 million units, which is nevertheless an improvement over their 13.8 percent year-to-date decline.

Two positive notes were sounded by freezer chests, with shipments up 11.6 percent, and garbage disposers, which saw sales soar 12.3 percent.

The tough times are also reflected in the so-called "AHAM 6," a composite category comprised of washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers and ranges. Sales for the grouping fell 5.4 percent last month and 6 percent year-to-date.
