HP Debuts Upline Backup Service

By Staff -- TWICE, 4/21/2008

Hewlett-Packard announced a new subscription-based online backup service.

The Upline service backs up data over a broadband Internet connection to HP's servers. Customers can select the intervals at which their data is automatically uploaded. Upline will be offered in three tiers, all of which feature unlimited data storage.

A home/home office plan, for $59/year, allows up to three PCs to log in using a single password. For $149, a family plan supports three independent subscriptions and individual log-ins. Finally, a professional plan supports up to 100 PCs, an administrative dashboard, priority tech support and emergency file recovery. It will cost $299/year.

All the plans offer file sharing, allowing users to email password-protected links to data stored on HP's servers. Files stored on HP's servers can also be accessed remotely so consumers can log in through a Web browser to edit and share their data. Data stored on Upline can also be published on third-party Web sites and blogs.

HP will offer a free version with limited online storage for one year.
