Maxell Corporation of America has expanded and strengthened its line of CD-R products and, at the same time, announced it expects to be the first to begin shipping evaluation samples of DVD-RAM II discs to a system OEM supplier.
New entries among the CD-R products include CD-R data discs with expanded 700MB capacity and color CD-R discs in both 650MB and 700MB capacities to make data sorting more convenient. Both items feature new slimmer jewel cases designed for easier retail merchandising and end-user storage.
The 8x CD-R 700MB discs come as singles, 10-packs and 50-piece spindles. The CD-R 650MB and 700MB discs come in red, blue and green to facilitate color-coding of data.
The CD-R color discs are provided with individual contaminant-free protective sleeves with a clear plastic front and dust-trapping back, and a plastic case that holds nine discs for permanent storage. These are available as single discs is a slim-footed jewel case.
Added to the new introductions is a 10-pack of CD-R 650MB discs in a plastic storage case with protective sleeves and a new 20-piece spindle box.
Shipping of the evaluation samples of new high-capacity DVD-RAM II discs was expected to begin in April. Maxell said end-user pricing should be about $45 for a 4.7GB single-sided disc and $70 for a 9.4GB double-sided disc.
"We have priced our DVD-RAM II at a level that is affordable and represents value for this level of capacity, reliability and durability," said Rich Gadomski, Maxell's national marketing manager for computer products.
"With the increasing popularity of the Internet, the growth of digital content, and the proliferation of larger files in more and more applications," Gadomski said, "end users will increasingly demand optical media that can handle high-capacity video, audio and computer data."
Fair Lawn, N.J.-based Maxell said that capacity of the new DVD-RAM discs exceeds current DVD-RAM discs by a factor of 1.8 times and permits the recording of a two-hour digital movie.
