NPD: Cellphones Up 14 percent

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 8/14/2007

Port Washington, N.Y. — U.S. consumer cellphone sales reached $2.4 billion, up 14 percent over the same quarter last year, according to The NPD Group.

Sales to consumers hit 33 million units, down from the first quarter by 17 percent, but the drop is considered seasonal as sales typically slow during the second quarter, said NPD.

“Despite seasonal slowness, the industry showed healthy year-over-year unit and revenue increases,” said Ross Rubin, industry analysis director, noting that consumers are “seeing value in moving to handsets that offer data driving capabilities.”

The top five handset makers remained the same as the in the first quarter. Motorola won a 32 percent share of the market, followed by Samsung with an 18 percent share, LG at 17 percent, Nokia at 10 percent and Sanyo at 4 percent, said NPD.

Nearly 70 percent of the phones sold during the quarter offered Bluetooth, marking an increase of 9 percent since the first quarter.
