Mobile Imaging Market To Expand

By TWICE Staff -- TWICE, 2/2/2009

Dallas — While revenue from compact digital cameras declines, consumers will up their spending on mobile imaging applications in the years ahead, predicted Parks Associates.

By 2013, consumers will be shelling out more than $500 million on imaging applications for their mobile phones, the research firm said.

Consumers will harness their camera phones for more than just photo sharing but for social networking, photo editing and comparison shopping, Parks said.

According to the research firm, by 2013, almost 70 percent of handsets sold in the U.S. will include 2-megapixel or above camera.

“Recent trends, including the launch of Google’s Android MarketPlace and Apple’s success with the App Store, have revived interest in the camera phone platform among carriers, handset makers and application developers,” said Harry Wang, health and mobile product research director, in a statement announcing the findings.

A la carte purchasing and software-as-service will sideline mobile photo printing as the “major monetization approaches” taken by carriers, Parks noted.
