New Digital Frames Focus On PC-Free Viewing

New York — Two manufacturers announced digital photo frames last week, hoping to capitalize on the swelling install base of digital still cameras and the need to view them outside of the limiting confines of the computer room.
Royal Consumer Information Products introduced the Royal Digital Picture Album and the Hot Shots keychain display.
The frame will be available in 8-inch and 5.6-inch versions and are desktop or wall-mountable. They accept memory cards, including CompactFlash, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, SD/MMC and the xD-Picture Card, and can connect to a PC via USB. They ship with a credit-card-sized remote control.
Royal's Hot Shots keychain, for a suggested $69.99, features a 1.1-inch LCD and can store up to 56 digital photos on its internal memory. The keychain downloads photos from a PC via USB.
The 8-inch PF 800, for a suggested $349, features a black wood frame and VGA resolution, while the 5.6 inch version, for a suggested $299, includes three interchangeable frames in silver, wood-grain brown and black.
Westinghouse Digital Electronics added a digital photo frame to its LCD lineup last week.
The 5.6-inch LCD frame (model #DPF-0561) can display single images or slideshows from camera memory cards, including xD, SD/MMC, CompactFlash and Memory Stick, in addition to downloading images to its 8MB of internal memory from a PC via USB. It has a 320 by 234 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio.
The frame is packaged with interchangeable mahogany, black or brushed aluminum frames. Photos can be previewed and rotated, and slideshow effects and transition speed can be chosen through an on-screen display.
It is shipping now for a suggested retail price of $149.99.
