Samsung Stepping Up With Omnia Touch Phone

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 11/25/2008

Samsung’s Omnia features 3.2-inch touchscreen with haptic feedback.

New York — Samsung launched its latest smartphone, the high-end Omnia, through Verizon Wireless, which priced it at $249 after a mail-in rebate and with a two-year contract.

The touchscreen phone, based on the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS, features a 3.2-inch touchscreen and uses CDMA 1x EV-DO Rev. A high-speed cellular data and 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi for its wireless connections.

The device will be available for order online at www.verizonwireless.com and in the carrier’s business-sales channels Nov. 26. Distribution will expand to all sales channels, including Verizon Wireless Communications Stores, on Dec. 8

The 4.41 inches by 2.24 inches by 0.52-inch device lacks hard dialing or QWERTY keypads but features virtual QWERTY and dialing keypads with haptic feedback. An optical mouse allows for quick and easy navigation by simply sweeping a finger over it.

The device is one of a handful in the United States with Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz user interface, which lets consumers customize the main screen with widgets that let them access key features with only one touch.

Other features include 5-megapixel camera with power LED flash, auto-focus, face and smile detection, and auto-panorama shot. It also offers camcorder, stereo Bluetooth, support for the Divx and Xvid video formats and 8GB of embedded memory.
