Samsung To Launch Music Download Site in Europe

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 9/1/2006

Berlin — Taking a cue from Apple, Sony, and soon Microsoft, Samsung is launching its own music website to work with its own upcoming portable media players. The website, however, is launching in Europe.

The service will be available in the U.K., Germany and France later this year, to be expanded throughout Europe and Asia after the initial launch. It will be offered through a partnership with MusicNet, which supplies back office content and technology to download and subscription services. In addition, MusicNet will help set up Samsung “download stores” in the U.K., Germany and France.

Samsung did not respond to TWICE inquiries regarding a U.S. launch. A spokesman for MusicNet said, “At this time, Samsung has only announced the service for the territories outlined.”

Samsung said the service will work with an upcoming line of “innovative” portable media players, including a K5, which will “offer consumers an exciting new way to listen to and experience digital music on-the-go,” stated Seungsoo Park, VP of Samsung’s digital AV division, digital media business.

Samsung said customers will have access to more than two million licensed songs, including content from all major record labels and more than 40,000 independent labels.
