Clarion Drops Reps

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 12/17/2008

Cypress, Calif. — Clarion is letting go of its independent manufacturer’s representatives and is switching many of its car stereo retailers over to regional distributors.

The company’s largest retailers will work directly with Clarion, effective immediately, and most of its retailers will work with regional distributors. Clarion, however, will continue to provide marketing materials, training and technical support to all retailers, who will also continue to have access to the Clarion extranet Web site, it said.

The move is expected to result in a cost savings for Clarion and provide smaller retailers with just-in-time deliveries, which will reduce their inventory costs. It was not known what distributor fees would be charged to retailers.

The announcement comes on the heels of other restructuring announcements in car stereo and related fields this week. These include the announcement that Bosch is looking for a partner for

Blaupunkt

or to sell the company, and Mitac (parent of portable GPS maker Mio) is planning to purchase Magellan, while

Panasonic and Harman Kardon

are exiting the U.S. portable GPS market.
