PMA: Photo Printer Sales Drop

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 3/31/2008

Jackson, Mich. — Sales of “photo quality” printers declined in 2007, according to PMA.

Fewer than 10 percent of U.S. households reported buying a photo quality printer in 2007 vs. 12 percent who reported buying one in 2006, according to the 2008 PMA U.S. Digital Imaging Survey.

Of those who bought a printer, 9 percent said they purchased one in a printer/camera bundle, down from 14 percent in 2006.

Additional findings from PMA:

Electronics stores accounted for one quarter of photo-quality printer sales;

Larger-format printers are eating up a larger share of the market in camera bundles, comprising 38 percent of sales in 2007, up from 29 percent in 2006;

Among digital-SLR owners, 19 percent purchased a photo quality printer last year, twice the rate as the overall population.
