'Flash Flood' Ahead: In-Stat

Staff -- TWICE, 11/5/2001

Memory cards, small portable memory devices used in multiple consumer applications, will continue to proliferate in many products, propelling an already large market to greater heights.

That is the opinion of Cahners In-Stat Group (www.instat.com), which indicates that during 2000, more than 36 million memory cards were shipped for a total revenue of over $1.6 billion. The research firm, forecasts that, despite a roughly 30 percent annual reduction in price-per-megabyte among most segments of the market, the memory card market will reach $2.6 billion in 2005.

The firm reports that as manufacturers of many products adapt memory cards, consumers will buy more and higher capacity cards resulting in a more than ten-fold leap in total megabytes shipped between 2001 and 2005. "The market for all of these memory cards is clearly on the upswing," says O'Rourke. "This trend will truly produce a 'flash flood' in consumer electronics."

The report, "Flash Flood: The Growing Market for Memory Cards in Consumer Applications" provides a complete review of the 2000 market for memory cards, as well as a forecast through 2005. Breakdowns are provided by application and memory card type. For more information, visit www. instat.com.
