Whistler Adds Solar Power To Radar

By Amy Gilroy -- TWICE, 12/4/2006

Whistler is introducing one of the first solar-power-enhanced radar detectors as well as one of the first battery-operated radar detectors to break the $100 price barrier.

The company's new XTR185 has a solar panel on the top of the unit that helps extend the battery life of the detector. The XTR185 has rechargeable batteries (nickel metal hydride) that offer approximately 18 hours of battery life when combined with the solar panel. Obviously, drivers in hotter climates will get better results from the solar panel, said Whistler.

Users can charge the battery through a 12-volt charging cord or in a home charger. The XTR185 offers total-band radar detection, including POP mode, and is just now shipping at a suggested retail of $139, or an expected street price of approximately $119.

A second battery-operated model (without a solar panel) is the XTR190, which will carry a suggested retail of $129, but is expected to hit a competitive street price of $99. It has similar features to the XTR185 but with a 16-hour battery life.
