Thomson Reveals New Video Decoder Chip

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 8/16/2007

Burbank, Calif. — Thomson will introduce a high-end video decoder chip at the upcoming IBC 2007 show for the content creation industry.

The new integrated circuit (IC) — Thomson 4230 — will be optimized for personal video recording (PVR) applications, and will provide HD decoding for H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and DivX codecs, as well as standard-definition streams, Thomson said.

Thomson will target the chip at set-top-box applications, developed by OEMs and ODMs. Thomson said it developed the chip for digital video broadcasting software stack and reference boards for satellite, IP and cable set-top boxes.

The Thomson 4230 will output HD and SD video simultaneously and supports the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) output as well as video content protection applications including Macrovision and Dwight Cavendish, Thomson said. Also supported are dual USB 2.0 and Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) interfaces that support PVR and DVR applications with or without a hard-disk-drive connection.

The dual high-speed Ethernet interface enables delivery of multimedia content across the home network to local or shared storage devices. The Thomson 4230 will also provide routing capability that allows customers to build and customize “triple play” solutions including audio, video and voice to meet their technical needs.
