Vendors Drop Prices On In-Dash CD Players

Alpine dropped the minimum advertised price (MAP) on two of its AM/FM in-dash CD players effective September 1, following a $10 mail-in rebate promotion offered by Sony.
The two Alpine CD players, models 7833 and 7835, fell to a MAP of $179 and $199, respectively, down from $199 and $229. Suggested retail prices for the units remain at $230 and $260, respectively, said Alpine national sales VP Glen Ihrke.
"All the current sell-through information says that two out of every three CD players sold are below $200," said Ihrke. "We felt we had to make this move to be sure our dealers have an Alpine to offer at popular price points."
Sony last month also began offering a $10 mail-in rebate promotion on the CDX 1150, which has a suggested retail price of $159. The rebate runs until December and is designed "to make the product a little more competitive. It shipped a little late in the year and we wanted to give it a boost," said Sony technical training manager Gary Schilling.
The CDX 1150 is an AM/FM in-dash single-CD player with a fixed-mount face, built-in 35 watts x 4 and a preamp output.
Separately, Ihrke noted that Alpine's new DVD Mobile Theater system, which began shipping late in July, is outselling supplies.
"We're still filling the pipeline," he said, "but we have been pleasantly surprised at the velocity of shipments. In one or two months we've blown through all the inventory we have, which is a surprise, particularly when it's a $1,200 system. We will be in back-order shortly."
Ihrke attributed the Mobile Theater's success to the general demand for home DVD and said, "There's just tremendous pent-up demand for DVD in the car, which is natural when you think about the number of DVD home units that have sold in the past couple of years." -- Amy Gilroy
