GPS Systems Tops In Holiday Sales Growth: NPD

Port Washington, N.Y. – GPS systems have enjoyed the greatest sales velocity in both dollars and units this holiday season according to the latest point-of-sale information from The NPD Group.

For the period of Nov. 18 through Dec. 9, sales of GPS devices grew 214 percent in dollars and a whopping 488 percent in units versus last year, the market research firm said.

The next biggest holiday gainer is digital picture frames, which enjoyed a 204-percent spike in dollar sales during the period, and a 266-percent increase in unit volume year-over-year.

Among other CE categories tracked by NPD this holiday period:

  • LCD TVs saw a dollar sales increase of 64 percent and a unit sales increase of 43 percent.

  • Plasma TV noted a dollar sales decline of 23 percent and a unit sales decline of 6 percent.

  • Notebook computers saw a dollar sales increase of 12 percent and a unit sales increase of 23 percent.

  • Digital point-and-shoot cameras’ dollar sales declined nearly 13 percent, but unit sales were up nearly 1 percent. Digital SLR cameras’ dollar sales increased 29 percent and unit sales grew 53 percent.

  • MP3 player dollar sales declined 16 percent and unit sales declined 9 percent.

Taken together, overall consumer technology sales reached $4.5 billion during the period, representing a decline of 0.5 percent year over year, NPD said.
