Warner Bros. Approves DivX Codec

By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 10/14/2008

San Diego — DivX said Tuesday that it has reached a four-year agreement with Warner Bros. enabling online retailers to offer Warner Bros. titles for playback on DivX-certified consumer electronics devices.

Through the deal, end-users with a DivX-playback enabled CE device, such as a DVD player, digital TV or Blu-ray Disc player, will be able to access and view Warner Bros. movies and TV programs offered by online entertainment content sites.

DivX said that more than 100 million devices have been shipped worldwide with DivX playback capability.

DivX said Warner Bros. content will be available in the standard DivX format beginning this month, expanding to include high-definition DivX content in September 2009.

DivX said it also recently signed an agreement with Sony Pictures Television and Sony Pictures Television International, making Sony content available in DivX format.

“Our traction with the studios is an important turning point for us because the availability of premium content is key to DivX achieving widespread adoption in the U.S.,” DivX said in a statement announcing the deal.
