Microsoft Intros SideWinder Mouse With LCD Screen

By Lisa Johnston -- TWICE, 8/22/2007

Leipzig, Germany -- Microsoft Hardware has debuted the SideWinder Mouse at the Games Convention, held here this week. The company is hailing the product as the first gaming mouse “built from the ground up.”

The SideWinder Mouse was engineered to provide custom tuning tools and a design for ultimate handling. Features include one-touch access to Windows Vista Games Explorer, Quick Turn — a performance-enhancing macro that lets users check their perimeter from wherever they are in-game — the “first-ever” LCD on a gaming mouse and a cable anchor that doubles as an accessories storage box.

The SideWinder Mouse lets users create an individual gaming system with tuning options that allow them to personalize their SideWinder Mouse, including an adjustable weight tray, changeable mice feet with three materials for glide preference, DPI control and new software features. Gamers can record their own macros by tying a sequence of actions into one press of a button.

The mouse’s Quick Turn feature is built right into the software and lets users check their perimeter at any angle from wherever they are in the game with the click of a button. It comes with a weight cartridge system with four weights (up to 30 grams) so gamers can customize the weight of the mouse to their preference. It also ships with three sets of feet, offering varied levels of glide depending on personal preference and the surface used.

A 2,000-DPI laser engine delivers super-fast response time, and three DPI switches behind the scroll wheel allow users to toggle between low-, medium- and high-sensitivity settings. The LCD on the mouse is designed to enable users to easily keep track of gaming actions without being distracted from the game.

Other features include cable management system, which doubles as a storage compartment; quick-launch button; vertical side buttons; wide, dented metal scroll wheel; and balanced weight.

It is scheduled to become available in October for an estimated retail of $79.95. It is currently available for preorder at Amazon.com.
