Sprint To Sell 1-Megapixel Camera Phone

By Greg Scoblete -- TWICE, 7/9/2004

Overland Park, Kan. — Sprint announced today that it will begin selling its first 1-megapixel camera phone, the Audiovox-manufacturered PM-8920, through its stores this month.

According to Sprint, the PM-8920 is the first 1-megapixel camera phone in the U.S. market. It will use the carrier’s Picture Mail digital photography service and carry a suggested retail price of $299.99 with a rebate to bring it to $149.99.

The unit’s camera features a built-in flash, self-timer, 8x digital zoom, in addition to four different shutter sound options, 40 internal photo borders, and the ability to append a 10-second voice clip to any Picture Mail. Phone features include a built-in speakerphone, an internal phone book with 300 entries, customizable photo caller ID, and an airplane mode that powers down the phone independently of the display so games and applications can be used.

The PM-8920 will be Sprint’s first phone with a 260,000 pixel TFT LCD display on both the interior and exterior screens. The phone supports Sprint PCS Vision network with SMS text messaging, along with Dual-Band/Tri-Mode functionality.

According to Sprint, over 100 million digital photos and videos were shared over its enhanced PCS Network from August 2002 to March 2004.
