8.1-Megapixel Camera Phone Due In Q4 From SonyEricsson

By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 6/18/2008

Singapore — New cellphones unveiled here by SonyEricsson include the company’s most advanced camera phone to date with 8.1-megapixel resolution and two cellular USB modems incorporating high-speed packet access (HSPA) technology.

All three models are due in the fourth quarter and operate in frequency bands making them suitable for sale in the United States. Sony Ericsson has not said whether the 8.1-megapixel cameraphone will be available in the U.S. but confirmed the device will be available in Canada in the fourth quarter.

The camera phone, called the Cyber-shot C905, is the company’s first slider under the Cyber-shot sub-brand and the company’s highest resolution cameraphone. If it hits the U.S. market, “it will be one of the first if not the first cameraphone [in U.S. distribution] with more than 8 megapixels,” a spokesman said.

SonyEricsson’s C905 slider is also an 8.1-megapixel camera with face detection.

The C905 will be available in two worldphone versions suitable for distribution by AT&T Mobility. C905c version is a quadband GSM/EDGE model operating in the 850/1900MHz U.S. bands and foreign 900/1900MHz bands. The C905a adds W-CDMA HSDPA operation in the U.S. 850/1900MHz bands and foreign 2100MHz bands. The devices are also equipped with Wi-Fi and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) certification for wireless home networking.

The C905 looks like a camera when closed and includes a real Xenon camera flash, the company said. It will be available in three colors at pricing that wasn’t disclosed.

Other C905 features include face-detection auto-focus, GPS, 2.4-inch scratch-resistant glass display and included 2GB Memory Stick Micro memory card. Using DLNA-certified Wi-Fi, users can send photos wirelessly to DLNA-certified PCs, TVs and other devices. Other features include stereo Bluetooth and Sony’s BestPic to quickly select the best of multiple pictures taken in rapid succession,

The MD400 and MD400g HSPA USB modems are not the company’s first HSPA USB modems, but these

add combined M2 Memory Stick Micro and microSD memory card slot. The MD400g, like a previous HSPA USB modem, also adds built-in GPS receiver and a GPS utility to track a user’s location on Google Maps.

Both new models are planned for U.S. sales, but a timeframe and price haven’t been announced.

Their theoretical maximum download speed is 7.2Mbps, and the theoretical upload peak is 2Mbps. Both are quad-band EDGE models with HSPA operation in the U.S. 850/1900MHz bands and foreign 2100MHz band. They also feature built-in antenna and external swiveling antenna that, when not in use, covers the retractable USB connector. Pricing and U.S. distribution plans were not available.
