Survey: HDTVs Top Holiday Shopping Lists For CE

by Alan Wolf -- TWICE, 11/30/2007

Scottsdale, Ariz. — HDTV has edged out last year’s winner, digital cameras, as the most sought-after CE product for the 2007 holiday season, according to a new survey by market research firm In-Stat.

Digital cameras came in third this year, behind PCs.

What’s more, four out of five consumers plan to buy a CE product over the holiday period, the report showed.

In-Stat, a division of Reed Business Information, the parent company of TWICE, questioned 2,227 consumers about their CE purchase plans this holiday season. Here’s how the top-ranked product categories fared:

·         HDTV: 20 percent

·         PC: 17 percent

·         digital camera: 15 percent

·         portable media player: 9.3 percent

·         mobile phone: 9 percent

Respondents said they planned to purchase “high ticket” items such as HDTVs and digital camcorders for themselves, and would purchase more portable (and affordable) products like digital cameras and portable media players as gifts for friends and family.

All told, some 80 percent of respondents included a CE product on their holiday shopping lists, suggesting that consumer electronics are a top priority for purchase at the holiday season.

The complete report is free to In-Stat members or can be purchased for $3,495. An abstract of the study and ordering instructions are available online.
