Smartphone Gets MP3

London— Sony Ericsson announced new capabilities for its planned P800 smartphone, which will feature MP3 playback and Memory Stick slot when it ships in quantity in the United States in the third quarter. The triband (1900/1800/900MHz) GSM/GPRS smart phone is based on the Symbian OS and features built-in VGA digital camera. It can display Microsoft attachments, wirelessly download short video clips and run Java-based programs which could be downloaded wirelessly. It features handwriting recognition, multiple browsers (HTML, xHTML, I-Mode, and WAP), and Multimedia Messaging Service. It will come packaged with a stereo headset and 16MB Memory Stick, which will complement internal 12MB memory.

Nokia FM Radio/Phone Due

Helsinki, Finland — The triband GSM/GPRS 6610 from Nokia will feature color display, J2ME, preinstalled J2ME applications, MMS, polyphonic ring tones, integrated FM stereo radio, and hands-free speakerphone, which will also let a user listen to the radio without a stereo headset. The GSM 900/1800/900MHz phone will be available in foreign markets in the third quarter. U.S. availability wasn't announced. Preinstalled Java apps include currency, temperature and weight converter, stock-tracking program and games. It comes with interchangeable color covers. Talk and standby times run up to 5 hours and 300 hours, respectively.
